Actor/Comedian's Ex-Wife Scammed by 'Adviser to Stars'

December 21, 2011
[ by Melanie Gretchen ] Eddie Murphy's ex-wife allegedly was defrauded out of at least $7 million by her financial adviser and old flame, Troy Stratos.  He's a self-described movie producer [C-I Note: Yes, yes.  Everyone in L.A. is a movie producer.] who's left a trail of debt throughout Europe and North America.  Stratos was ultimately arrested in Los Angeles on charges of mail fraud, money laundering and obstruction of justice in a federal indictment unsealed yesterday in Sacramento, CA. Prosecutors' Findings and Allegations. Stratos persuaded Nicole Murphy, 43, to turn over more than $8 million she received from a divorce settlement, which he said he would invest in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates - through his connections - that could generate higher returns that in the United States. Stratos transferred the money into personal accounts, which he spent on a Rolls Royce and on movie production costs - like moving his company's staff into Murphy’s mansion in Granite Bay, CA, near Sacramento. Stratos then convinced Ms. Murphy to raise additional funds by refinancing her house and the house her mother owns.  He told her that members of Middle Eastern royal families had expressed interest in buying her house, which she should make more attractive by leasing luxury cars to have on the property.  Alas, the strategy was implemented, he used the cars but no house sales were ever arranged. Stratos Criminal History. There are other victims who have lost money to Stratos.  In Hawaii, Stratos never paid a $2.1 million civil judgment against him.  In February, Hawaiian real estate agent Dennis Rush sued to recover funds he gave to Stratos, which was to go into producing a jazz CD - that never happened.  Yet, Stratos has paid some obligations - like $50K paid to a recording studio owner, a judgement from several years back. The case: U.S. v. Stratos, 2:11-cr-0537, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California (Sacramento). [Bloomberg, 12/21/11]
