Bernie Madoff: Out of the Market, Off the Market

October 18, 2010

Bernie Madoff's no longer investing in the market, unless of course he's organized an investment club for inmates at Butner, NC, federal prison.  [C-I: What B/D would want that account?  What B/D wouldn't?]   He's also "off the market" because the last Madoff home, in Florida, found a buyer - in the $5mn range.

It's a Palm Beach, FL, home owned by Ruth Madoff and it's near the Palm Beach Country Club, which counted Mr. Madoff as a member and from which he drew many investors.  A California couple reportedly is buying the home, which had a preliminary 2010 valuation of $5.4mn, according to public records, down from $7.7mn the prior year.  The 2 other Madoff properties - in NYC and Montauk, NY, were seized by the federal government and have long since been sold.

Related News.  The second auction of items belonging to the Madoffs is scheduled for 11/13, in Midtown Manhattan and on-line.  Items up for sale include: a Steinway grand piano, a diamond ring, furniture, antiques and clothing.  An auction of items seized from the Palm Beach home will likely take place in Florida after that home is sold, according to the Marshals.   [WSJournal, 10/13]
