BofA Site Blames Site Problems on Internal Issue

February 5, 2013

[ by Melanie Gretchen ]

Bank of America customers suffered another setback on Friday when trying to access their accounts online.  The 2nd-largest U.S. bank by assets denied the disruption was caused by hacker attacks.  Customers logging into BofA's website on Friday received a message that said the site was "temporarily unavailable."  Some customers vented their frustration by tweeting on twitter.

Last year, the bank fell victim to a wave of computer attacks last week along with JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, and PNC.  This year, it said the disruption was not caused by hacker attacks.

[C-I Note: This is now the 3rd time the bank has experienced similar issues: in October 2012, it suffered almost a week of access problems, which was attributed to heavy traffic and an ongoing systems upgrade.  Is the problem technology- or security-related?]
