Citigroup Subpoenaed by DOJ

February 24, 2012
Citigroup's annual regulatory filings were submitted on Thursday, disclosing that the bank had received a subpoena from U.S. Department of Justice on 1/27/12, about the same time that state and federal authorities were investigating Citi's role in creating mortgage-backed securities ("MBSs"). Citi also states in the filings that it had received other subpoenas and requests for information ("RFIs") during the inquiries. What makes January 27 so relevant is that, on that day, the Justice Department, along with other federal regulatory agencies (including the SEC) held a joint news conference announcing the formation of a new U.S. government unit tasks with investigating and rooting out misconduct in the bundling of loans into securities that may have fueled 2008’s credit crisis. The department subpoenaed 11 financial firms in the days beforehand, Attorney General Eric Holder said at the time, without naming names.  Now we have a clue which banks may have more "skeletons in their closets."
