Credit Suisse Clients Raided for Tax Evasion

[ by Melanie Gretchen ] Credit Suisse Group AG clients, be ready.  German tax inspectors, in recent week, have raided homes of that firm's client base, suspected of evading taxes, according to bank and German government officials.  This marks a tougher stance against the bank from last November, when a U.S. request prompted Credit Suisse to hand over to the IRS the names of American clients suspected of offshore tax evasion of U.S. taxes. Who's a Target. The investigation is focused on some 5,000 clients who between 2005 and 2009 allegedly purchased insurance policies at a Bermuda-based subsidiary of the Swiss bank.  Clients bought the policies in order to earn tax-free interest on savings, people familiar with the investigation said. What the Bank Is Doing. Since that time period, a bank spokesman said in a statement the bank has told clients who bought the policies to talk to their tax advisers.  In addition, he said that the bank told its clients that they – and not the bank – were responsible for determining their tax obligations when they bought the products, where the spokesman said were legal in Switzerland.
