Ex-NBA Star Indicted

March 26, 2012
This former National Basketball Association player was a star player with the Connecticut Huskies and a first-round pick of the N.J. Nets.  Though his professional career spanned just over 3 seasons and was rather forgettable, he's remembered for catching a long inbounds pass and hitting a 15-foot jump shot with one second left to give the Huskies a victory over Clemson in the 3rd round of the 1990 NCAA tournament.

Tate George, 43, now will be remembered for his connection with a $2 million Ponzi scheme.

George was indicted on 4 counts of wire fraud by a Newark grand jury, 6 months after he had been charged with one count of wire fraud.  According to prosecutors, Tate George held himself out as the CEO of the George Group, a real estate firm.  Between 2005 and 2011, Tate George allegedly collected more than $2 million for his firm from investors who believed their money would be used to buy and develop real estate projects.  Former professional athletes were among his targeted investors. Instead of investing in real estate projects, George is charged with having used the money to repay earlier investors and spent some on home improvement projects, child support payments, restaurant meals, clothing and gas.  The George Group had virtually no income-generating operations, although the defendant claimed to have more than $500 million of assets under management. George will be arraigned at a future date and faces as much as 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.   The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman in New Jersey.   Thomas Ashley is representing George, and had no  immediately comments. The case is:  U.S. v. George, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, No. 11-mj-03197. For further details, go to:  [Reuters, 3/23/12].
