Former Countrywide CEO Mozilo 'Walks'

February 23, 2011

Federal prosecutors dropped a criminal investigation of Angelo Mozilo, the former CEO of Countrywide Financial, without taking action against him.  The grand jury investigation spent over 2 years exploring Mr. Mozillo’s conduct during the mortgage crisis at Countrywide, once the nation’s largest mortgage lender.

In October, Mozilo agreed to pay $67mn to settle SEC charges that he had masked the risks of the subprime mortgage market in public statements to shareholders.  The Justice Department doesn't announce when it has ended an inquiry - news of the inquiry’s closing was reported The L.A. Times.   [NYT Dealbook, 2/20]
