Galleon: Someone's Missing, and Judge Gets Note from Jury

May 2, 2011

Raj Rajaratnam was MIA, and the jury startled the courtroom at noon.

Raj was not in court Monday morning, 9:30. He hadn't missed a day of his trial.  The defense team later said that, "Mr. Rajaratnam is absent ... today because he underwent emergency surgery on Sunday morning.  Mr. Rajaratnam had developed a bacterial infection in his foot that required surgery.  Mr. Rajaratnam has waived his right to be present until he can return.  The Court has approved this absence. ..."

Nothing much happened until noon, when there was word of a jury note – first in 2 full days.  Everyone ran into the courtrooom expecting the judge to make an appearance.   Instead, the lawyers were called into the judge's chamber, remained there for more than a half hour, then left without saying what had transpired.   On his way into the elevator, one prosecutor told reporters it was about “nothing profound.”   [DealBook, 5/2/11]
