Greenberg Talks With Dewey
April 25, 2012
Greenberg Traurig LLP's managing partners are explore a possible deal with Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP, that seems to get deeper and deeper in its troubles and struggles with each passing day. The NYC law firm definitely must consider merging with another law firm - at least as a safety option.
Greenberg is a 1,700-lawyer firm that was founded in Miami. Its top partners have been reaching out individually to key partners at Dewey, according to 2 Dewey lawyers. Dewey and LeBoeuf has approached at least 3 firms about options that include a potential merger, according to people familiar with the matter.
Conversations over the weekend between the 2 firms - many placed by the Greenberg partners - were described by a Dewey partner as "social" and "highly introductory." Financial terms and structure of a potential merger were not discussed.
It's uncertain where the 2 firms stand in terms of progress [C-I: And frankly, we don't know what, if any, time pressures face Dewey]. Greenberg reiterated on Monday that the talks were "preliminary discussions relating to lawyers" at Dewey but that no agreements have been reached. Neither firm responded to WSJournal questions or requests for comment.
