HSBC Gearing Up for Big Job Cuts

July 29, 2011

HSBC reportedly is gearing for a big cost-cutting drive, that could involve more than 10,000 job cuts.  The U.K. bank employs 330,000 persons worldwide, and the report comes after it said in May it was looking for sustainable cost savings of $2.5-$3.5 billion in order to reach a cost efficiency ratio target of 48% to 52% by 2013.

HSBC already cut 700 jobs in its UK retail banking arm from a workforce of 55,000.  It also said that it would be conducting a strategic review of its cards business in the U.S., and would limit its retail banking operations to markets where it can achieve profitable scale.  [Reuters, 7/28/11]
