In NYPost Poll, Public Would 'Throw the Book' at Gupta

October 25, 2012

[ by Melanie Gretchen ]

Even though the verdict is in, how would you have sentenced Rajat Gupta?  (i) > 6 years;  (ii) 4-6; (iii) 2-4;  (iv) < 2 years;  (v) probation.

Rajat Gupta is not popular among New York Post readers.  Right now, the former Goldman Sachs director – and the highest-profile name to get caught up in US Attorney Preet Bharara’s insider trading probe – faces up to 10 years in prison when sentenced on Wednesday.  His legal team has petitioned for community services, and no jail time.  Bill Gates and Kofi Annan have come to his aid to ask the judge to spare the 63-year-old from prison.  Readers weren't so forgiving.

The Poll. Readers were asked to choose from 5 choices regarding what Mr. Gupta should receive, in prison time or probation:
  • More than 6 years
  • 4 to 6 years
  • 2 to 4 years
  • Less than 2 years
  • Probation
Results:
  • More than 6 years: 55.6%
  • Probation: 16.2%
  • 4 to 6 years: 12.2%
  • Two to four years: 9.8%
  • Less than 2 years: 6.2%
