Iran Sanctions Case Against Turkish Trader Reza Zarrab to Move Forward

October 17, 2016

A federal judge on Monday allowed the U.S. government to move forward with its case against Turkish businessman Reza Zarrab, denying his lawyers’ motion to dismiss an indictment that accuses Mr. Zarrab of helping Iranian entities evade U.S. sanctions. Mr. Zarrab, who was arrested in March when he landed in Florida for a family vacation, is scheduled to begin trial in January.  One of his attorneys is Benjamin Brafman.

Manhattan federal prosecutors have accused Mr. Zarrab, a 34-year-old gold trader in Turkey, of using a global network of companies to allow Iranian entities to conduct hundreds of millions of dollars worth of financial transactions through U.S. banks. He has pleaded not guilty and, if convicted, faces up to 75 years in prison.
