Linklaters Partner to Run CFTC's New Derivatives Division

August 23, 2011

Gary Barnett, who currently heads the U.S. derivatives and structured finance practice group at Linklaters in New York, was appointed to lead the CFTC's new division monitoring the swaps market.  His area will be responsible for overseeing swap dealers and intermediaries in that market.  Mr. Barnett also brings to the table significant knowledge about clearing systems for the derivatives market, a main reform in the Dodd-Frank law.

"His derivatives expertise will be essential to leading the CFTC's new division, which will be integral to implementing the Dodd-Frank provisions that will lower the risk of the swaps market to the overall economy."   -  CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler.

Barnett, who's been a partner at Linklaters since 2004, was previously with Shearman & Sterling, where he was the co-head of securitization and derivatives practice.  [Reuters, 11/22/11]
