Man Who Sued Facebook Pleads Not Guilty to Fraud

November 29, 2012

[ by Melanie Gretchen ]

Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg were the targets of a New York businessman who tried to extort both out of billions of dollars.  In Federal District Court, appearing before Judge Andrew Carter on Wednesday, the extortionist - Paul Ceglia, 39 - entered a plea of not guilty.

Riches to Rags.   Ceglia was charged by federal prosecutors with faking a business contract that purported to show that he owned a large stake in Facebook.  In 2010, he sued Zuckerberg on the grounds that he was owed the stake.  With his argument rejected by the Courts, Ceglia now faces up 40 years in prison  - if convicted of mail and wire fraud.  Currently, he is free on bail, following his arrest last month at his home in Wellsville, NY.

The case: USA v. Paul Ceglia, Federal Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-mj-01171. Ceglia has been assigned a federal defender.
