Meet the $1,800 Per Hour Lawyer
June 11, 2012
[ by Melanie Gretchen ]
What can you say about a lawyer who charges $1,800 an hour? That he doesn't care about the size of his year-end bonus? The astronomical fees highest fees on record are booked by a Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher partner, according to the WSJournal which reported that the hourly fees came to light in bankruptcy filings for LightSquared, Inc.
And, of course, we're talking about Former Solicitor General Theodore Olson. Second place at the firm belongs to partner Eugene Scalia, son of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. He's charged out at $980/hour.
Moving into the LightSquared. Mr. Olson, an appellate lawyer, was retained by LightSquared in March in preparation for a possible legal battle with U.S. regulators. Earlier this year in February the FCC said it would withdraw preliminary approval for the company’s network after government tests found that the signals would interfere with global-positioning systems. Phil Falcone's firm, based in Reston, VA, filed subsequently for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 5/14/12, listing assets of $4.5 billion and debts of $2.3 billion - as of 2/2912.
Flying High: A Class of Their Own. So far, Mr. Olson has appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court in 58 cases - including his service as lead counsel for President George Bush in the 2000 Supreme Court case that decided that year’s election. More recently, Mr. Olson has worked with David Boies - his counterpart in that 2000 Supreme Court case, representing Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore. They worked together to legally challenge California’s 2008 ballot measure - i.e., Proposition 8 - that banned gay marriage.
