Microsoft Hacked

February 26, 2013

[ by Melanie Gretchen ]

Microsoft reported on Friday that a small number of its computers were hacked and infected with malware.  Fortunately, the world's largest software company says there's no evidence that customer data was breached.

Among the affected computers were some in the company's Mac software business unit.  The attacks appeared similar to recent incidents reported by Apple and Facebook.  Microsoft, which did not issue a public statement on the attack, would only list the incident as having happened "recently."  However, the attacks at Apple and Facebook, occurred over the past week or so, giving Microsoft's system breach some timing context.

"This type of cyberattack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries." -- Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Trustworthy Computing Security at Microsoft, in the company's blog post.
