New Nasdaq Marketplace for Private Shares

March 7, 2013

[ by Melanie Gretchen ]

Nasdaq OMX Group, in collaboration with SharesPost - whose online marketplace drew a lot of SEC fire last March - will form a marketplace for trading in shares in unlisted companies.  The joint venture is set to launch later this year.

SharesPost's online trading platform matches buyers and sellers of unlisted shares.  The SEC charged the company for failing to register itself as a broker-dealer before offering securities.  The new venture, will be based in San Francisco and  be headed by Greg Brogger, founder of SharesPost in 2009.  As for SharesPost's broker dealer and investment advisory businesses, they will continue to operate separate and apart from the Nasdaq joint venture - which must obtain regulatory approval before commencing.
