OJ Simpson Star Lawyer Plans IPO for Online Legal Service
March 1, 2012
[ by Melanie Gretchen ]
The largest online legal document service in the U.S. is weeks away from filing a registration statement for an IPO, according to sources familiar with the company's plans. Conceived by Robert Shapiro, who was on O.J. Simpson's defense team, the company presently is interviewing underwriters and looks forward to the SEC registration.
LegalZoom.com, founded in 2001, helps people draw up legal documents such as wills, incorporations and trademarks without lawyers and corresponding fees. It currently serves upwards of 1 million customers toward a profitable, if slow growth. Last year, it launched a new business that connects people with attorneys for advice, for a monthly fee.
Conceived by Robert Shapiro. LegalZoom was conceived by Robert Shapiro, part of O.J. Simpson's legal defense team, who worked on the case with Robert Kardashian, the late father of celebrity Kim Kardashian. Mr. Shapiro helped start online subscription website ShoeDazzle with Kim Kardashian and Brian Lee, who also was a co-founder of LegalZoom.
