Petraeus Hires Top Defense Attorney

November 19, 2012

[ by Melanie Gretchen ]

David Petraeus is "covering his flanks" in a very large way.  The former CIA director has brought in Robert Barnett, a partner of 34 years at Williams & Connolly, who's represented a hosted of celebrities and other high-profile clients.

Mr. Barnett burnished his reputation by negotiating book deals for the political elite, from President Barack Obama to one-time VP candidate Sarah Palin.  This year, it's Mr. Petraeus' turn to recruit Mr. Barnett's help, as Petraeus is suddenly forced to navigate the fallout from a career-ending affair.

No Book Planned.   Perhaps Mr. Petraus has had enough written about him for the time being – by his biographer and tryst partner, Paula Broadwell.  Petraeus has also be the subject of countless articles following the disclosure of his affair with Ms. Broadwell, followed immediately by his resignation as head of the CIA.

[C-I Note:  If there's a winner in this sordid mess, it's Ms. Broadwell, who has a huge best seller on her hands.  A little notoriety goes a long way in helping an author publicize a newly published book.]

More On Attorney Robert Barnett.   It is Mr. Barnett's task to successfully excise Mr. Petraeus from the  government and military controversies that take on new dimensions each day.  Mr. Barnett joined Williams & Connolly in 1975 and, in 1978, became a partner.

He has represented best-selling authors, political leaders, TV news correspondents and other high-profile clients.  Most importantly - for David Petraeus, Mr. Barnet has helped former government officials return to private life - including former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, former Secretary Of State Madeleine Albright, as wekk as former Congressional leaders.
