Raj Rajaratnam: 'Mr. October'

March 16, 2011

On 9/30/2008, with the markets in a tailspin, Raj Rajaratnam was on the phone complaining to Danielle Chiesi (who has pleaded guilty to insider trading) about the markets.  Raj paused, then said:  "I need to get back to basics;  I’m gonna become 'Mr. October'," referring of course to NYYankee great Reggie Jackson.   "I love that," Ms. Chiesi replied.  At the end of the call, he concluded: "I’m feeling the pain but they can’t kill me. I’m a warrior. October’s my month."  This was according to transcripts released by government prosecutors on Monday.  For further details, go to:   [NYT Dealbook, 3/15:  Lattman's "The Sporting Life at Galleon"]

Fast forward to Friday 10/16/2009, and Raj Rajaratnam, the world's 559th wealthiest individual and hedge-fund owner, was arrested in New York, charged with insider trading.

Congratulations in Order.  Mr. Rajaratnam had successfully 'called his shot' - much like another NYYankee great, George Herman "Babe" Ruth.  He, indeed, become "Mr. October."
