SAC Settlement Talks End

May 21, 2013

[ by Melanie Gretchen and Howard Haykin ]

SAC Capital's settlement talks with government prosecutors over alleged insider trading charges have come to an end.

It was just one week ago that a deal was on the table, calling for SAC to pay a fine and the Department of Justice to no longer pursue criminal charges against the firm in connection with past trading in 2 pharmaceutical companies, among others.

Yet, that was then and these days SAC is telling investors that the firm is no longer cooperating with the government.

With settlement talks ended, the firm and its founder, Steven A. Cohen, may have more to lose than the proposed fine they had been negotiating.  Mr. Cohen was subpoenaed to testify, and the federal investigation could escalate into indictments for both, SAC and Mr. Cohen.

Blackstone Group, SAC's largest external investor, would have preferred a quick resolution.  It now plans to redeem some of its money before the June deadline, along with other clients who are anxious about SAC's future - which just grew dimmer with the suspension of settlement talks.
