SEC Chair Nominee’s Wife to Leave Goldman Upon His Confirmation

January 26, 2017

The wife of President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the SEC - Jay Clayton - intends to leave her job at Goldman Sachs if and when her husband is confirmed by the Senate.

Gretchen Butler Clayton, who's married to SEC nominee Jay Clayton, is a wealth manager at the bank in New York. With his wife gone from the bank, Clayton would eliminate a major conflict of interest. But Clayton, who has represented Goldman as a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, still might have to recuse himself from making decisions on the bank as chairman.

The Senate has yet to consider Clayton’s nomination.
