SEC's New Senior Advisor for Investment Management Division

The SEC promoted a 13-year veteran of the Commission as its new Senior Advisor to Norm Champ, the Director of the SEC's Division of Investment Management.  When she moves into her new role this month, Jennifer McHugh will advise Mr. Champ  on issues related to mutual funds and investment advisers.  The Division's mission is to protect investors and promote capital formation through oversight and regulation of the nation’s multi-trillion dollar investment management industry.

Profile of Jennifer McHugh:  During her 13-year career at the SEC, Ms. McHugh has served in the following roles:

  • Acting Director of the Division of Investment Management from late 2010 to early 2011.
  • Senior Advisor to SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro since 2009.
  • Division Attorney, focusing on mutual fund rulemaking, when first joined in 1999.
  • Special Counsel in the Division’s Office of Investment Adviser Regulation in 2000.
  • Senior Advisor to the Division Director's Office, advising 2 Directors and 2 Acting Directors on management and policy issues from 2001 to 2009.

Ms. McHugh has been honored for her service at the SEC, receiving its Distinguished Service Award in 2012, and three times receiving the Chairman’s Award for Excellence.  She has a B.A. from Notre Dame, and a law degree from Catholic University.  After law school, Ms. McHugh was an associate in the Investment Management Practice Group of Dechert LLP.   [SEC Press Release 2012-260, 12/11/12].
