Senate Reinforces Crackdown on Tax Evasion

[ by Melanie Gretchen ] The Senate is shoring up its crackdown on identity theft and offshore tax evasion, after the division experienced a 30% loss, according to Bloomberg slowing a U.S. crackdown on offshore banks that enabled tax evasion, four people familiar with the matter said.  New York attorney Kathryn Keneally will serve as assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s tax division, where she will oversee more than 300 civil and criminal lawyers who handle a wide range of investigations and litigation. Fresh Blood. Ms. Keneally, a partner at Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, was President Barack Obama’s 2nd choice after lawmakers blocked an earlier nominee, Mary L. Smith, a partner at the Chicago law firm of Schoeman Updike Kaufman & Scharf.  Ms. Keneally was confirmed among scores of nominees for top government jobs, including Michael Horowitz, a Washington-based lawyer, as inspector general.
