Senate Reinforces Crackdown on Tax Evasion
April 12, 2012
[ by Melanie Gretchen ]
The Senate is shoring up its crackdown on identity theft and offshore tax evasion, after the division experienced a 30% loss, according to Bloomberg slowing a U.S. crackdown on offshore banks that enabled tax evasion, four people familiar with the matter said. New York attorney Kathryn Keneally will serve as assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s tax division, where she will oversee more than 300 civil and criminal lawyers who handle a wide range of investigations and litigation.
Fresh Blood. Ms. Keneally, a partner at Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, was President Barack Obama’s 2nd choice after lawmakers blocked an earlier nominee, Mary L. Smith, a partner at the Chicago law firm of Schoeman Updike Kaufman & Scharf. Ms. Keneally was confirmed among scores of nominees for top government jobs, including Michael Horowitz, a Washington-based lawyer, as inspector general.
"Kathryn will be integral to our efforts to enforce our nation’s tax laws fully and fairly, and Michael will promote integrity, financial austerity and effectiveness in Department of Justice operations." -- Eric Holder, Attorney General
A partner at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, Mr. Horowitz served in the Justice Department’s criminal division, first as deputy assistant attorney general and then as chief of staff to the head of the division. In addition, he was chief of the public corruption unit in the Southern District of New York.
