Sheila Bair to Write Book on Financial Crisis
Former FDIC Chairperson, Sheila Bair has landed a book deal to give her inside account of the financial crisis. “Bull by the Horns: What Main Street Must Do To Fix Wall Street,” was sold to Free Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. It will be published in 2012, before the presidential election. According to the publisher, this is the first time that we’re going to hear from one of the very few women who was involved at a very high level of the banking crisis.” In her proposal she notes that " I will share perspectives on the problems of regulatory capture and the continuing reluctance of bank regulators to fully acknowledge current problems in the financial sector, which are substantial. The United States is facing its most serious problems since the Great Depression, is at the risk of another financial crisis and requires “more forceful action” to stabilize the financial system." She also said that the book would be laced with personal anecdotes about her role as “the only woman among the principal government players during the crisis” and her relationships with Henry Paulson, Ben Bernanke and Timothy Geithner. In 2006, Ms. Bair, a 57-year-old Kansas native, was appointed by George W. Bush to run the F.D.I.C. and was one of the first government regulators to warn of the impending housing crisis. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. [NYTimes 7/11/11]
