Stanford Exec Gets Plea Deal

June 19, 2012
[ by Melanie Gretchen ] The Allen Stanford saga isn't over.  Ahead of her September trial, the former chief investment officer for the Texas financier, has struck a plea bargain to serve 3 years in prison, three people familiar with the matter said. Laura Pendergast Holt, 38, has denied wrongdoing ahead of her September trial on charges related to Stanford's 110-year sentence on 6/14/12.  According to what she told Stanford Financial Group Co. investors and the firm's financial advisers, she oversaw a stable of international money managers who were responsible for the bulk of the bank’s assets, according to court papers.  Yet, she may have only had authority over as little as 20% of the bank's assets, according to testimony during Stanford’s trial. Going Forward. Nevertheless, she will plead guilty to a single obstruction charge, said one of the people, all of whom asked not to be identified because the plea agreement isn’t public.  Pendergast Holt is scheduled for re-arraignment on July 21 in federal court in Houston, according to court records. Prosecutors charged her in June 2009 with conspiring to mislead investors in conjunction with Stanford and CFO James Davis.  During Stanford’s trial, Davis told jurors he had a 3-year affair with Pendergast Holt that Stanford approved of, which ended in 2003.  Afterward, Pendergast Holt married her personal trainer, James Holt, whose hedge fund she invested some $2 billion of the bank's portfolio into, according to testimony. The case: U.S. v. Stanford, 4:09-cr-0342, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas (Houston). For further details, go to [Bloomberg, 6/19/12].
