Suspicious Packages Prompt Evacuation of Credit Suisse

December 14, 2011
Credit Suisse staffers were briefly evacuated from their Manhattan offices on Wednesday morning after the Swiss bank received two suspicious packages in the mail, Credit Suisse said in a statement that it informed the New York Police Department about the two packages, and that police officials advised an evacuation of the firm’s headquarters in Midtown Manhattan.  The firm said that police officials determined around 12:30 p.m. that the packages were not a threat, and that employees were allowed to return to the building. A police spokesman Reuters that the packages appeared to be “a legitimate shipment,” and seems to have included camera equipment. This comes days after Deutsche Bank intercepted a letter bomb addressed to its chief executive in Frankfurt. By contrast, X-rays of the package sent to Deutsche Bank’s chief executive, Josef Ackermann last week showed both explosive content and shrapnel. That incident briefly prompted heightened security around New York City, including at the headquarters of major banks.  [Dealbook 12/14/11]
