The Real Unemployment Number Spikes

October 8, 2010

Business Insider's Joe Weisenthal reports that, while the headline unemployment number held steady at 9.6% in September - per Friday's jobs report - "real unemployment" clocked in at about 17.1%.  Why so?  Mr. Weisenthal refer to jobs data aficionados who are frequently drawn to U-6, so-called "real unemployment," that includes discouraged or marginally-attached workers.

In that case, the September numbers spiked to 17.1%, from 16.7% in August.   [Clusterstock, 10/8]
