U.S. Attorney’s Office Names New Chief of Securities Fraud Unit

[ by Melanie Gretchen ] The U.S. attorney's office announced on Wednesday that a veteran federal prosecutor in Manhattan will be its next chief of the securities fraud unit office in Manhattan.  Prior to his appointment, Marc Berger was deputy to Christopher Garcia, who's now at Weil, Gotshal & Manges. In his new role, Mr. Berger will lead a team that has prosecuted a number of hedge fund traders and other corporate insiders including Raj Rajaratnam, the billionaire head of the Galleon Group hedge fund.  Mr. Berger first joined the U.S. attorney's office in 2002.  His deputy in the securities unit will be Anjan Sahni, previously co-chief of the terrorism and international narcotics unit.  Mr. Sahni's replacement will be senior prosecutor Jocelyn Strauber, to serve alongside the other co-chief, Michael Farbiarz. Background. Before Mr. Berger became the deputy to Mr. Garcia in March 2010, he was  a member of the securities unit, where he successfully prosecuted a $23 million real estate offering fraud, which involved 3 principals of the Cobalt Companies, and a $13 million Ponzi scheme, Mr. Bharara’s office said.  He is a graduate of Cornell and the University of Virginia School of Law. Prior to Mr. Sahni's appointment as deputy to Mr. Berger, he was a co-prosecutor of the Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout, convicted at trial last year and is facing sentencing.  Mr. Sahni also oversaw the successful prosecution of the would-be Times Square bomber, Faisal Shahzad, according to Mr. Bharara’s office.  Mr. Sahni graduated from Emory College and Yale Law School. Previously, Ms. Strauber had been a deputy chief of the terrorism and international narcotics unit.  She joined the office in 2004, and co-prosecuted Christopher Coke, a Jamaican drug trafficker who pled guilty to conspiracy charges last year and is also facing sentencing.  She is graduate of Brown and Duke University School of Law.
