Wells Fargo Disclosed SS# of Neediest Customers: Conn. AG

January 10, 2012

[ by Melanie Gretchen ]

Wells Fargo allegedly released the Social Security information of 100 New England customers who had asked the Connecticut Department of Social Services for public assistance, according to a letter sent by the state's attorney general last week to James Strother, Wells' senior executive vice president and general counsel. The information was listed on at least 2 subpoenas issued to the bank by the Connecticut agency to confirm those customers' assets before releasing food stamps, according to a press release.  Afterward, Wells Fargo sent unredacted copies of those documents to the customers named in the litigation, according to a recent letter to the bank's legal counsel. In response, Wells Fargo said it will help those impacted, offering the option to sign up for complimentary identity theft protection safeguards.  According to the letter, the attorney general expects a response from the bank this week.
