Goldman Partners’ Holdings Drop Below 5%

July 21, 2017

Once upon a time, Goldman’s so-called partners owned more than 60% of the outstanding shares of the company. That was in 1999, when Goldman Sachs Group went public. Today, 18 years later, Goldman partners hold a 4.8% stake in the business – which means the firm probably won’t disclose partners’ holdings, so long as that figure remains below the 5% regulatory threshold. There are 450 or so partners.

The reduced holdings by partners also means that the public won’t be able to learn about share purchases and sales by partners. That has been a source of fascination, like when one of the biggest holders, Gary Cohn, stepped down as President to join the Trump administration. More recently, Isabelle Ealet, one of 3 three executives atop the firm’s securities division, was a big seller, disposing of more than $3.5 million of shares over 3 weeks in May.
